It might still feel like summer here, but my minds starting to move towards the winter fun ahead. The last two paintings of last Ski season are here. A bit bigger than my normal ski paintings. Setting off from the top of the Grande Motte Cable Car, Tignes / Val d’Isere ready to ski and snowboard down the most amazing galcier that I know, 77x33cm oil on board. This ones just going to the framers to get a frame, price £495. The second paintings is the mad rush (for some of us ) from the top of the funicular to be greeted by heaven, the Grande Motte glacier cable car just opening, no queue and a piste full of deep powder……..run……………………..Oil on canvas 100cm x 40 cm x 4.5cm. Price £595. They are not on the web site yet but will be there quite soon. Take a look at the rest of the ski and snowbaord paintings for sale. https://petecaswell.co.uk/wp2/product-category/ski-snowboard-paintings/
Work is progressing well at the studio with the 3 new display studios in the fields due for completion by spring next year all ready to display some of the extra large paintings. More information about visiting the new studios will be posted on the web site at the start of the ski season. www.petecaswell.co.uk
To celebrate the near end of the ski season I had to do my favourite ski painting as a large version. I love this one of the skiers and snowboarders exiting the funicular at Tignes / Val D’Isere on the way to the cable car to scale the heights of Grande Motte.
Next season’s plans are being laid to visit Verbier, St Moritz and Zermatt on a grande tour by train and skis. Forget summer, lets have another winter.
I love Tignes and Val d’Isere ski area. It is awesome and unforgettable. My very first skiing and snowboard paintings were based on this huge ski area and I have been returning to this area as my main motif ever since. This painting is a real beauty setting off from the top of the Grande Motte cable car with wind blown snow whistling around your ankles.
The cable car terminal is a photographers delight and I have recently made a short film about this special destination which will be released soon. The Glacier itself is a perfect gradient and the snow conditions are often perfect with the peak acting as a bit of a powder magnet.
The Grande Motte glacier is one of my favourite places in the world. Arriving at the top of the funicular for the first coffee of the morning is unforgettable and the place I always start on Christmas morning skiing. Then onto the top of the glacier via the Grande Motte cable car. The top of this cable car is very special to me. I find it an extreme and exciting place, right next to the peak of Grand Motte towering above with views spanning out in every direction.
This is one of the most classic ski paintings I have done. sat at the cafe at the top of the Funicular at Tignes with my morning coffee painting the skiers and snowboarders as they race towards the first run of the day or catch the first cable car. The line of skiers racing past with the cool ski instructor in red just chilling having seen this over eager race for season after season.
Top of the Henri piste at Tignes and Val d’isere has been quite a subject for me with the Tufs chair lift overhead and the piste seeming to disappear into the sky in the ever expanding distance. It always raises the thought in me as I stop at the edge of the piste to check out the off piste drop to paranoid piste. So wonderful and fun with the steep descent opening into a beautiful powder field and then opening to a full speed blast across the lower slopes. But watch out for the unexpected lips of powder dropping into shallow bowls.
Check out the video below of some skiing and snowboarding in Tignes and Val d’Isere and some of the paintings of these famous pistes and lifts. And see why you have to be careful on the off piste descent from top of Henri piste.
Chamonix Mt Blanc the Aiguille Du Midi and Vallee Blanche 3842m
Chamonix is the centre of atmosphere with the epic valley views of Mt Blanc and the cable car up to the Aguille du Midi at 3842. This is an incredible place on top of the earth with access to the world famous Vallee Blanche off piste itinerary from the top of the cable car right down to Chamonix valley.
This is a beautiful Chamonix oil painting, 80cm x 80cm x 4.5cm deep on canvas. Full of texture and colour this painting captures the atmosphere beautifully. After leaving the Aiguille Du Midi cable car and ice tunnel you are straight onto the arete en route to the Vallee Blanche with a view all the way down to Chamonix. A rope guide is all that stops you from taking the direct route back to Chamonix.
Heading down the ridge to the start of the Vallee Blanche after leaving the Aiguille Du Midi cable car. This is a great painting mimicking the atmosphere of this special place on Mt Blanc, Chamonix. Mosaic texture and pattern of colours make this an interesting painting. Look out for the skiers making their way to the descent in the bottom left. 70cm x 50cm x 4.5cm deep with the image painted on the edge.
Aiguille Du Midi Glacier & Cable Car, Mt Blanc at Chamonix and the Vallee Blanche Oil painting For Sale.Looking up at the Aiguille Du Midi cable car on Mt Blanc Chamonix. Skiers setting off to the Glacier off piste route left. Colours and patterns on the glacier centre and right. Beautiful mosaic effect of the colours and textures on the canvas help to add atmosphere to the glacier ice. Oil on canvas 70cm x 50cm x 1.8cm deep.
Argentiere ski and snowboard painting for sale. Lightly coloured turquoise and purple on a smaller canvas of part of the Chamonix ski area. I will be revisiting Chamonix again this winter so expect some more ski paintings from The Grands Montets, Brévent / Flégère ski areas.
Courmayeur and Mt Blanc ski and snowboard oil painting for sale. Epic colours and textures make this wonderful semi abstract oil painting float off the wall. On deep canvas 80cm x 80cm this is an amazing painting and I love it. I can only say the jpeg does not do it justice. The glacier sweeps down from Mt Blanc in the centre and Mt Blanc climbs up to the right through the trees. Pistes part of the Courmayeur ski area deep in powder lie off to the left. Probably be in the £800 mark when it is put up for sale later in the year.
Verbier Skiing paintings will add a real atmosphere to your wall. From 60cm x 60cm deep block canvas up to over 100cm wide framed oil paintings
Skiing and Snowboarding paintings from Verbier and Mt Fort are nearly ready. Here is the collection from last years epic powder season.
This is a beautiful collection of really luscious and colourful oil paintings inspired by the powder above Verbier in Switzerland. You really have to see them in the real life with the fantastic textures and colours.
There are two more smaller paintings to still complete while these bigger paintings up to 1m across are drying.
Verbier and Siviez Paintings For Sale for Skiers and Snowboarders in this beautiful Ski area in the Swiss Alps.
This is the first of this years ski season of the new ski and snowboard paintings for sale. This season the focus for the paintings is on Verbier and Siviez where I had a fresh powder dream last year in the unbelievable conditions and the incredible lift accessed off piste. These two paintings are bigger around a metre in length and on board using thick oil paints. The colours are deep and mature with purples, magenta, deep reds and hot blues. There are some interesting textures and colour combinations. These skiing and snowboarding oil paintings will be put on the site for sale towards Christmas of you can pre purchase them. They are just about complete and will need about two to three months to dry before they can be shipped.
This ski, snowboard painting is just above Siviez. Looking down into the Siviez valley with chair lift Siviez 61 dropping down into the trees. This is an epic bit of piste in the powder full of jumps and small cliff drops. From Plan Du Fou at the top when you have tried the epic off piste to Tracouet try this lovely run. As you reach the bottom of the drag Plan Du Fou 62 head straight on off piste and so much fun awaits jumps and rocks and trees, magic.
The painting is set on a fresh powder day with the cloud just starting to lift. Just below on the left you can see the bottom of the run on the other side of the valley accessed from Novelli chair lift. To the right you can see the mountains starting to peak out from under the clouds. The trees are to the right and the drop offs are straight under the lift where you head down. Beautiful deep greens and colour combinations make up the trees on the other side of the valley. To get a bit more orientaion, if you were to look just to the right of the painting through the trees and the clouds you would see Mt Fort peaking out. Price to buy this oil painting will be £750 framed and incl. shipping to Northern Europe.
This is a beautiful ski painting of the mountains just above Verbier as you drop down into the town. Tree lined runs and a wide open powder filled piste with new tracks and mounds of snow. Lovely colours and textures in the beautiful oil painting of Verbier. Great focus point and mountains in the distance make this a great painting to have on the wall. Full of colour and texture make this a real interesting painting to look at and bring some real life to your wall. Its about a metre across and will go on sale in a couple of months for £750. Its virtually finished except for putting a few skiers and snowboarders hidden in the woods. The painting is from near the lovely restaurant at the top of Maventzet lift in between Medran ski run and Etierces skiing run, looking down towards Verbier and beyond into the valley.
My paintings are all about the ultimate joy in life which we can feel. They work to try to capture the joy and feelings of upliftment which we al seek to find through whatever we are doing.
We all love to have fun, enjoy life, smile and be happy. Behind these emotions is a beauty which we can access at these special and rare times of pure pleasure, in whatever place or activity it may be.
I have spent much of my life chasing this illusive and special beauty which we feel in our times of joy and happiness; from the Himalayas, to the Pacific islands, from hedonistic skiing in the alps to sailing and surfing in the Caribbean, from spiritual gurus to beautiful women, from sunning in the Indian Ocean to blissful meditating in the depths of Asia’s spiritual heritage.
I have chased this nugget of gold all round the world and it has been a lot of fun, it’s a really great job to have to do, but someone has to!
I always have my camera or paint brush to hand to capture these moments of pure happiness. When I hit on a particularly rich seam of pleasure, happiness, joy and fun I rush in to capture its essence. In these images and especially the paintings I have strived to distil this illusive path to joy and pleasure into a concentrated form. In my paintings I have used special techniques of light and dark, sparkling colours, inspirational brush strokes, gold and silver leaf and everything else which can stimulate these feelings of upliftment and pleasure. I try to produce a link from beyond the physical to make images which replicate these feelings in the paintings, once I have returned home. Fun, joy, happiness and pleasure rule the waves and oceans, so take a look at the painting to see if it works for you. It does for me. I love my paintings, do you?
Check out the paintings for sale on the web site from colourful tropical sunset oil paintings to skiing in the frozen mountain tops. This year I am moving towards painting larger paintings for sale as they give me so much fun. You really feel like you are sucked into the paintings when you stand in front of them, especially the sunsets. This winter will see my first large skiing and snowboarding paintings released for sale. Most of the ski paintings for sale over the last few years have been small and make great collections for the wall. This year I will take on the challenge to make a very big ski painting for the wall. Check out the facebook page or the blog this winter for more paintings for sale as they are released.
