Focus on Tignes & Val d’Isere this week. 2 new super big paintings from Toviere and Col Du Palet. There are a couple of more recent ones from Val D’Isere and Grande Motte among some older favourites.
This has to be one of my favourite ski areas of all time. The big draw is the Grande Motte glacier, not just for so many great memories but I think this is one of the most epic glaciers in the Alps. Its big, high and attracts powder like a magnet. Lots of room to play about and a great piste Leisse off the back which seems to hang onto deep powder and keep a pocket hidden away ready for me. And all this excitement without even going to any off piste options.
Its probably not the fact that this is an amazing glacier that really gets me desperate to go back again and again, but I love stopping for coffee at the top of the Funicular especially during a heavy blizzard when it seems like you are the only skier left on planet earth, even though I mostly Board at Tignes. This just feels like such an amazing place to sit, chill and contemplate a beautiful coffee, but French Standards anyway.
Then add this to my favourite cafe in Val d’Isere, the Sun Bar which sits at the bottom of the Face de Bellavarde. Love to sit here after a hair raising descent with little to no grip on a blunt board picking my way down through the rare grippy patch on a well worn Face. Its just feels right to sit here and watch the world go by. No scary French waiters to deal with either makes this super relaxing.
Tignes and Val d’Isere have to be my number one resort with probably Verbier equal favourite. This season has seen a bit of a focus on the Grande Motte cable car with two super large paintings which also have a large price tag, so I have made them available as prints. There are some sketches of Val d’Isere and Tignes which will be released in the next few weeks so put a LIKE on my Facebook page to see them.
I am in the middle of finishing off a few new smaller paintings of some of the popular chair lifts and pistes around Tignes with the skiers in raised relief 3d effect and one of my favourites of skiers setting off from the top of Grande Motte.

I have missed Tignes this year with a busy schedule of resorts to visit, getting very close with the 3 Valleys and Les Arcs but sadly was whisked off to Davos and St Moritz before I could set foot on the hallowed ground of Grande Motte. Here are a few of this seasons new paintings from Tignes and Val D’Isere. Do look out later in the season for my special focus on the Grande Motte Galcier and its cable car.
Some of the last skiing and snowboard paintings of the season for sale. The paintings are from Alpes D’Huez top of glacier, Tignes Grande Motte Glacier and Val D’Isere in the trees off Double m.

It might still feel like summer here, but my minds starting to move towards the winter fun ahead. The last two paintings of last Ski season are here. A bit bigger than my normal ski paintings. Setting off from the top of the Grande Motte Cable Car, Tignes / Val d’Isere ready to ski and snowboard down the most amazing galcier that I know, 77x33cm oil on board. This ones just going to the framers to get a frame, price £495. The second paintings is the mad rush (for some of us ) from the top of the funicular to be greeted by heaven, the Grande Motte glacier cable car just opening, no queue and a piste full of deep powder……..run……………………..Oil on canvas 100cm x 40 cm x 4.5cm. Price £595. They are not on the web site yet but will be there quite soon. Work is progressing well at the studio with the 3 new display studios in the fields due for completion by spring next year all ready to display some of the extra large paintings. More information about visiting the new studios will be posted on the web site at the start of the ski season. www.petecaswell.co.uk
To celebrate the near end of the ski season I had to do my favourite ski painting as a large version. I love this one of the skiers and snowboarders exiting the funicular at Tignes / Val D’Isere on the way to the cable car to scale the heights of Grande Motte.
Next season’s plans are being laid to visit Verbier, St Moritz and Zermatt on a grande tour by train and skis. Forget summer, lets have another winter.
I love Tignes and Val d’Isere ski area. It is awesome and unforgettable. My very first skiing and snowboard paintings were based on this huge ski area and I have been returning to this area as my main motif ever since. This painting is a real beauty setting off from the top of the Grande Motte cable car with wind blown snow whistling around your ankles.
The cable car terminal is a photographers delight and I have recently made a short film about this special destination which will be released soon. The Glacier itself is a perfect gradient and the snow conditions are often perfect with the peak acting as a bit of a powder magnet.
The Grande Motte glacier is one of my favourite places in the world. Arriving at the top of the funicular for the first coffee of the morning is unforgettable and the place I always start on Christmas morning skiing. Then onto the top of the glacier via the Grande Motte cable car. The top of this cable car is very special to me. I find it an extreme and exciting place, right next to the peak of Grand Motte towering above with views spanning out in every direction.
This is one of the most classic ski paintings I have done. sat at the cafe at the top of the Funicular at Tignes with my morning coffee painting the skiers and snowboarders as they race towards the first run of the day or catch the first cable car. The line of skiers racing past with the cool ski instructor in red just chilling having seen this over eager race for season after season.
Top of the Henri piste at Tignes and Val d’isere has been quite a subject for me with the Tufs chair lift overhead and the piste seeming to disappear into the sky in the ever expanding distance. It always raises the thought in me as I stop at the edge of the piste to check out the off piste drop to paranoid piste. So wonderful and fun with the steep descent opening into a beautiful powder field and then opening to a full speed blast across the lower slopes. But watch out for the unexpected lips of powder dropping into shallow bowls.
Check out the video below of some skiing and snowboarding in Tignes and Val d’Isere and some of the paintings of these famous pistes and lifts. And see why you have to be careful on the off piste descent from top of Henri piste.
