As a child I was mesmerized by the place. Arriving in March in the cold fresh air with the noise of the streams and fells in the dark air with the rustling of sheep and the country smells so unfamiliar to my Midlands town life. It was a place beyond all others, matched only by the love of the Alps and skiing all over Europe. during the Easter Holidays.

As we drove up the motorway to Patterdale there was always the exciting debate about the Kirkstone pass approach and the snow and ice or would we be forced to take the long way. Then in the morning excitement checking the fell tops of Helvellyn to see if there was snow left over from Winter.
