Lake District Paintings Martindale Helvellyn, St Sunday & High Street
This painting is from one of our favourite spots and encompasses views of 3 of my favourite peaks of High Street, Helvellyn and St Sunday in the distance. We love to stay in a grand old farmhouse at Sandwick in Martindale near Howtown on Ullswater. The farmhouse is a bit basic and very old fashioned but it’s in the most incredible setting with Stags wandering past the front door and red squirrels running amok in the back garden, a wonderful torrenting beck out front and Ullswater lake just a few hundred meters away.
With Dale Head in the centre and just to the left above is High Street and off to the right on the second row of hills in Helvellyn and St Sunday crag.
Bottom left is the early part of the walk as you just approach the tops into the first bit of sunlight. The sun is just peaking over the mountain tops to the left of Loadpot Hill casting its shadow into the valley and picking up the light green grass in the sunlight.
I love to visit in the Autumn and never in the summer. I like to see the colours of Autumn as it picks out the mountains in the most stunning way which the lush greens of summer flatten off to something that seems more manageable, shrinking the peaks.
Red, rouge and orange Brackens, golden moorland grasses and low sun all make for a spectacular scene. And just a dabble of snow catching the tops as November makes itself known with some early frosts.
This is a very large contemporary Lake District painting of Martindale 120cm x 100cm on block canvas 4.5cm deep so it can be left unframed or dramatised with a large frame.
The painting is about two thirds complete and you can see all the wonderful colours here. It should be ready in about 3 weeks so check the links below to catch the completed version.
I have to say that this was a painting unlike any others I have painted and I am not sure quite why. It touched my heart so beautifully and as I sat in the studio looking at it from the far side, trying to figure out how to complete it without damaging the inspiration, colours and sheer joy. It just gave me this most beautiful feeling of being there, and the colours just melted inside. I would call it bliss but I will no doubt be a bit more sensible and call it by its real name of something like Martindale. Bliss of Martindale is that too far out ?

The walk by painting In detail setting off from Sandwick or Howtown. Heading up track on West side of Martindale, then crossing the Dale to St Martin Church (Martindale Old church, then climbing up Steel Knotts towards Gowk Hill. The Nabb, Rest Dodd, The Knott and High Street all in the distance. Bonnerdale off to the left with Angletarn Pikes and Place Fell just out of sight. Romps Gill up to the left with High Raise, Rampsgill Head and The Knott. Its a bit of a compilation from this walk from a few points. Bottom right is the start in the valley of Martindale and then climbing up to Steel Knotts, but the view is a combination from there and higher still so you can see the valley and far right also Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Fairfield.
