This sunset painting is based on a West coast sunset from North Devon UK near the studio. The studio is very near to the ocean which lends a big influence to the paintings. Every day I cycle into the rising sun in the morning and the setting sun on the headland on the way to the studio to paint. This constant exposure to the sunsets and sun rises over the ocean lends itself beautifully to these large sunset oil paintings.

 

I use bold colour to its utmost to fill the paintings with a sense of joy and light. Combinations of bright colours in their pure form create vibrant memorable images. Pinks turquoises, blues and yellows work to construct an impression of the scene which captures not just the visual but much of the joy, energy and feelings to captivate the viewer. Large Paintings For Sale

Very large paintings for sale, the larger the better and they look stunning on any wall. You can browse through the various painting genres and sizes on the site Sunsets, Oceans, Skiing, Sunflowers and Indian. We often paint these to commission to fit the size you want for your room and loosely base the painting on one of Pete’s other paintings.

There are two main types of large paintings:

Very Large Sunset Paintings have a central theme which pull you into the painting.  Based around sunsets or low sun scenes, the light of the sun in the centre of the paintings and the colour combinations naturally draw you into the paintings, giving them a magnetic and uplifting quality.

Very Large paintings which are more abstract in nature or of a scene with no obvious central pull. These aren’t so obvious at the first look but can provide an interesting feature to look at over time with the eyes discovering new parts and hidden features & meaning within the painting over time.

The large paintings vary from 0.7m x 1m up to 1.5m x 1.2m. If you would like a bigger painting than this, please ask as we do occasionally have them for exhibition or you can order one by commission on the medium & colour of your choice.

Most modern houses have a ceiling height of between 2.1m & 2.3m. So if you want a painting to fit above the sofa then you are limited usually to 1.0m x 0.8m or 1.2m x 1.0m.

1.0 x 0.8m A painting of 1.0m x 0.8m will fit in most modern houses and is the smallest of the large paintings. It will fit in landscape format above the sofa.

1.2m x 1.0m is lovely but if you have a modern house with low ceilings mark this size on the wall to check its okay. This again should just fit in most modern houses just above the sofa, but check first. 1.2m x 0.8m or 1.2m x 0.6m are possible sizes which you may have to order if we don’t have in stock.

1.2m x 1.2m is also a good option and the square format works well as a piece on its own.

1.5m x 1.2m really is big and looks amazing. We don’t stock many of these so you may want to commission one. Choose an image you like and ask if we can do a bigger version for you. Copies of paintings are never the same, they are totally original. We keep the colour scheme and the general feel of the painting, but in the spirit of the way Pete paints, each one is inspired differently.

To work with the decor in your room we do paint some larger paintings to commission to a specific size and medium. You can choose deep block canvas or on board so that you can frame the painting.

Another technique to get a large painting is by choosing a smaller painting such as a 50cm x 70cm and then having the image professionally mounted and framed so a 50 x 70 painting becomes a 80 x 100cm painting. This has the added effect of using the mount and frame to tone the painting into your room and the framing can make it look truly amazing. We do not frame to this standard here, you need to find a good local framer and choose the frame with professional advice.

Shipping.

We ship these large paintings securely all over Europe for free. Once your painting is over 1m wide it is very difficult to fit the painting in the car. 1.2m paintings rarely fit

in cars so shipping by courier is usually the best option even if you visit the studio, unless you are visiting in a campervan / caravan . If you do visit the studio and are desperate to take a large painting with you we do have ways of fitting them in, but courier is the easiest method to get them home.

Ever wondered what happens after you click the buy button on the very large oil painting for sale that you want to buy. Well that’s when all the fun starts. The bigger the painting the more work we have. It takes a lot of work to wrap these up and try our best to get the paintings to you in one piece. Foam edges, several layers of bubble wrap and then 2 layers of card for the large paintings.

We often end up making a ply case for the very large oil paintings so they stand the best chance of reaching you in pristine condition. It can be very exciting to receive one of our paintings in it’s ply case, packed and sent by air mail right to your door quite often by free next day shipping within most of Europe.

See below for how your painting might look by the time it leaves us in the delivery van. First is a very large 1.5m x 1.00m ply backed colourful framed oil painting. The next one was  a very special order of a colourful sunset oil painting 1.0m x 0.8m deep canvas which was packed in one of our ply cases and air mailed direct to Monaco to a very happy customer. If you don’t like the painting for any reason when you receive it then just send it back and we will refund the cost of the painting less the shipping no problem. We also insure all the paintings, so if it get damaged in the post we will have it collected and issue a refund.

Last winter I had the most fabulous time painting a ski painting commission, a lot of fun because it was a real challenge. I got an email from an Irish man working in Japan who wanted a ski painting for a present for his wife who was still back in Ireland. The painting was on the glacier above Val d’Isere, a stunning place on top of the word. I have thousands of photos I use as reference for ski paintings of runs in a lot of the top European Ski resorts, especially the highest runs. But this one eluded me. Of the 1000 photos I had of Tignes and Val d’Isere, one of my top favourite ski areas, I could not find anything on this run.

I asked the client if he had any images of the runs on the Glacier. No luck so I had to piece it together from memory. I had skied the glacier many times in December and the weather had not been so kind with mostly blizzards and low cloud. I could remember the runs down in the gullies and the off piste pipes under the chair and a picture slowly emerged in my mind. Several days later I had a more or less full recollectionn of the scene and managed to pin down the area where the painting was to be. It was low down on one of the runs where the client had proposed to his wife many years ago, but no photos of this event existed . Many emails were exchanged and I built up a picture of the time of day the weather and where they were on the run. If you have skied this run, then you know it is quite a featureless area and with a dump of fresh powder the night before there was not much in the scene that I could work with. I need people, strong landmarks and contrast to make scenes work well. This was devoid of everything I use to make an interesting ski painting. The texture and colours hidden in the snow were going to be the making of the painting and expansiveness of the scene relative to the people.

The final email before I started painting was an amusing mock up photo of the male client proposing to his male work colleague so I could get the positioning of him and his wife right. A few photos of him and his wife in their ski gear at that time were the final clues I needed before I started.

This was such a tricky painting that I did not ask for a deposit as I wasn’t sure if it would work and I didn’t want the pressure of having a commitment to get it right so the deal was – if you like it you can buy it and if not no problem. It turned out to be so much fun to do as the client was very helpful in advising alterations to get the scene just as he remembered it.

The last job I had to do was to check what his wife’s favourite colours were to make sure she would at least like the colour scheme. Baby blue and baby pink were the colours so this would serve as part of the underlay of the painting with the white snow on top.
